No, I Can't do a Push-up for you

#22pushups for #22kills. You've seen the hashtags, I'm sure. Last night as I fell asleep on the couch, completely exhausted from waking at 4:45 am in order to get my workout in, I vaguely recall my husband setting his iPhone up on the floor and cranking out 51 push-ups. I remember thinking: "Crap, I still need to do my push-ups...but I'm snuggling with Lil' Liesel...." Needless to say I didn't get up and join him. I watched him with one eye open and half-heartedly counted along until he stopped. I mumbled: "Good job, baby..." and stumbled to bed.

I remember thinking to myself: "He got those out quick, maybe he can do mine for me." No lie, I seriously considered asking my husband to do push-ups for me. You do the push-ups but give me the guns. Then I remembered something I heard Jim Rohn say: "You can't hire someone to do push-ups for you. You have to do them yourself."

Have you ever thought it'd just be stellar to have someone come over, do your workouts for you, plan and cook all your meals, and give you the positive attitude that you so desire? It'd be killer if someone else could just do these push-ups for me. Push-ups are hard! Why do them when laying on the couch is an option? Right?! Why bother thinking about what I'm eating, what things I feed my brain or whether I'm surrounding myself with good influences or not? Simple answer: because no one can do it for you. NO ONE. If you want healthier habits, healthier meals and a healthier, happier disposition YOU are the only one that can make it happen. There are a million resources readily available for you to succeed, but they are completely useless if you don't make use of them. It's why Self-Help books are now referred to as "Shelf-Help" books. Ninety percent of the time, after they're skimmed through or read, they're placed back on a shelf. All that insight is now in your brain, yet, you've done nothing with it. There are so many ways to get fit and healthier. There's gym memberships, at-home programs, Mother Earth and your own body weight! Jog a trail, walk your dog, freakin' march in place in your living room while watching Scrubs! You have everything you need at your disposal, we live in one of the freest countries in the world, these simple things are right here, right now. To eat healthier, you only need to make the decision to do it, follow through and everything else falls into place. I don't know how it does, but it does! There are cooking shows, recipe books, magazines, support groups, cooking classes and a variety of information online! Everything is pretty much handed to you; except for the effort. You'll come up with every excuse in the book to avoid doing these "push-ups", I know it because I did, too. Any of these sound familiar?

  • "I can't afford to eat healthy, organic is so expensive." It is, you're right. So get yourself some apple cider vinegar and give those more affordable veggies a nice warm bath in the kitchen sink for about 15 minutes.

  • "I can't afford a gym membership or a workout program." When was the last time you really wanted something? Nothing got in your way, did it? Whether it was a night out full of drinks at the bar with friends, a Starbucks Vente Latte or a Coach bag. Re-evauluate. You get one body. I hear those Coach bags can be found anywhere. Don't quote me, I don't own one.

  • "I don't have time to workout." Are you in some time warp? We both get the same 24 hours in a day, yes? I agree, I don't want to go to the gym either, this is why I do my workouts at home. I find whatever break there is in my day and make it happen. A 30 minute workout is merely 2% of your day.

  • "I don't have all that fancy equipment, though." Neither did I when I started. I purchased a set of 5, 10 and 15 lb. dumb bells to start and a resistance band to pretend to do pull-ups with. No need to break the bank.

  • "I don't really read books." Well that's a damn shame. So many up-lifting things out there to fill our brains with, yet we make time to watch Reality T.V? If you don't care for reading, try audible and find yourself some good motivational books and speakers like Wayne Dyer, Jim Rohn or the Daddy of Personal Development- Tony Robbins.

In short, resources are there for each and every one of us to do these "push-ups". We have to want to do them. I can't do them for you and you can't do them for me. Here's three things that may help you on the road to doing your push-ups:

  1. First and foremost get yourself around some like-minded people! It's hard to make the time to improve ourselves if we're hanging with people who don't share our goals.

  2. Find some type of physical activity you enjoy and start- today! Maybe it's a program you already have, or maybe you found that sweet spot during the day to march in place in your living room. Please don't blame time or whatever resource you have in place that you aren't using. It isn't the gym or the purchased program that doesn't fit. It may be that your desire to improve and your current habits don't align. Re-evaluate. Make adjustments.

  3. For Pete's sake, put down the breakfast taco if it's making you sick, throw out the cheeze-its and eat an apple! Chances are one apple at the grocery store is cheaper than Donut-Taco Palace.

Now drop and give me 22!
